Jontry has concerns about education secretary approval
He urges the new secretary to invite onto her staff as well “education scholars who understand the federal government has no constitutional authority to dictate education policy”, and that the USA education department should be “phased out of existence”. The teacher, who declined to give her name, said she came because she thinks DeVos’ emphasis on school choice could exacerbate segregation in our educational system.
No, Betsy DeVos has exactly one qualification: She’s a multi-billionaire, and she isn’t stingy with her money – as long as she gets a return on her investment. At one point, she said schools should be allowed to have guns if their districts wanted, citing the threat of grizzly bears in Wyoming. She may have been attempting a joke.
A force of nature in Washington, D.C. will soon affect students directly – that force is Betsy DeVos.
Public schools can not turn kids away, and we are held extremely accountable for how our students do on standardized tests. The results of her efforts there haven’t been promising. Following the defection of two Republican senators last week, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski and Maine’s Susan Collins, Vice President Mike Pence needed to cast the tie-breaking vote, which was unprecedented in Cabinet nominations.
The Feb. 9 editorial “Do your homework, Ms. DeVos” restated The Post’s long-standing support for “school choice”. He has taught educational policy courses in the Sanford School of Public Policy and the Program in Education. Her confirmation hearing was an absolute embarrassment. It’s open to everyone!’ and ‘Ms Devos: Our children are not props.’ DeVos was a major financial backer of vouchers that let parents use public funding at private schools as well as public schools.
Demonstrators awaited DeVos’ arrival at Jefferson Middle School Academy on Friday. “We will work with anybody when it comes to what’s best for kids”. We manage to defend our country, police our streets, put out fires and, usually, drink out of any water tap in the country with confidence.
These services aren’t meant to be profit centers; we maintain them in order to support and promote the wellbeing of the republic. “No school door in America will be blocked from those seeking to help our nation’s schoolchildren”.
You had better believe that Democratic senators, who probably want to keep their cushy jobs and understand that you don’t do that by angering your benefactors, stood up and took note when union leaders expressed concern about Trump’s pick to lead the Education Department. The challenge is to do it for every child. Families being able to choose schools based on their children’s unique needs as opposed to being sorted into a box like so many identical eggs, feels…well… it feels American.
CNN reported that members of BlackLivesMatter DC, the Black Youth Project, and other groups also showed up after the groups sent social media messages urging people to protest at the school.
