Jordan apologizes to Mavericks, Cuban on Twitter
By Wednesday night, it became clear that Jordan, who had committed on Friday to join the Mavericks as a free agent, planned to renege on the agreement and return to Los Angeles.
This time, Dallas Mavs owner Mark Cuban is unravelling the events that transpired during the last 48 hours of the free agency period.
Speaking to the graduates of the inaugural class of the Presidential Leadership Scholars program at Southern Methodist University on Thursday, Cuban was asked how he handles a setback like the Jordan situation, and what he says to his people at times like this.
Clippers coach Doc Rivers, one of those at Jordan’s house to make sure he signed with Los Angeles, countered Thursday that it’s up to the agent to contact a team.
Jordan, however, reportedly did not take any calls or respond to any text messages sent from Cuban at all.
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – The Clippers’ odds to win the 2016 National Basteball Association Finals changed significantly after they officially re-signed DeAndre Jordan earlier this week.
After that, on Thursday morning, Cuban went off on his Cyber Dust account.
“I’m shocked, very disappointed, frustrated, disrespected”, he told Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas.
Said Orlando general manager Rob Hennigan: “I don’t think this is the first time that something like this has happened”. That’s what I thought he didn’t want.
“We all walk into these conversations understanding that as with any business contract, it’s not a deal until the paper is signed”, union spokeswoman Tara Greco said. “If you’re not going to meet with him, pick up the phone and tell the guy that you’re committed to what you’re feeling, what you’re going through and maybe he can talk it out and help you”. Jordan had agreed to a four-year max contract with the Mavs last week but decided this week to stay with the Clippers.
“Through all of Monday we were texting back and forth discussing players available, the amount of cap room we had left”, Cuban wrote. “He knew I was close by”, Cuban said. I think he’ll be good in L.A. He’s got a good team, he’s got a great point guard, he’s got Blake, but I think he could have been a superstar in Dallas. Cuban said in a radio interview, shortly after coming to a verbal agreement with DeAndre Jordan over the Fourth of July weekend, that Dallas would throw in the towel if it missed out on the star free agent. So while I was concerned, I still wasn’t anxious. I knew something was up. More importantly, I specifically told Wesley Matthews that I would not hold him to his commitment if he wanted to go elsewhere.
