Jordan Spieth wins Tour Championship to cap off big season
With a win Spieth would collect US$11.4million via the tournament winners cheque and the $10million FedEx Cup bonus money.
“I got frustrated”, Spieth said of the first three playoff events.
The first person to greet him was his little sister, Ellie, who keeps him so grounded. The top five of Day, Spieth, Stenson, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson were guaranteed to claim the FedEx Cup title by winning at East Lake.
Stenson couldn’t do much about it.
Jordan Spieth is a champion!
Day said the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews in July was the spark he needed to get his mind focused on winning consistently.
He had played well to reach two under through 17 holes, and five under for the tournament. And it was the same putting display, really, today.
A bogey on the 14th, however, checked his momentum before another birdie on 15 put him within sight of the lead. “It’s hard to argue that”.
Spieth ends the year with $34,000,000 in earnings, the most lucrative season in PGA Tour history.
The same money is on offer to the player who tops this year’s FedEx Cup standings, with current race leader Jason Day only even par for this week’s tournament and seemingly out of contention for either prize on offer. Spieth became the first player to win the Masters and the Tour Championship in the same season…. He won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest adjusted scoring average.
Stenson made a $1 million putt of his own, though it was the least he could do.
He stretched his lead to two shots with a birdie at No. 2, where his tee shot at the 219-yard hole finished 10 feet from the hole. And would a million dollar FedEx Cup bonus change that?
Johnson, the British Open champion, is No. 6 and still has a chance if he were to win, as long as Day doesn’t finish second.
Spieth shot a 1-under 69 on Sunday to win by four strokes over Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose and Danny Lee. He still has events left on the European Tour.
Jordan Spieth stayed on course for a $10 million payday at the Tour Championships here Saturday, firing a two-under-par 68 to snatch a one-shot lead as Sweden’s Henrik Stenson faltered.
“We only do this at the majors”, Greller said.
However, the ultra-competitive Spieth geared up for a run at the Tour Championship/FedExCup double and hit his target. Ultimately, that’s what finished off his big year.
“This year is unreal”, said Spieth. “Just approach Atlanta like a major championship”. I saw Jordan shot 66 which was a great round’.
He rolled in a 26-foot effort on the seventh for his first birdie and then followed it up with a 21-footer on the ninth to go to the turn at level par.
As it is pretty now, the PGA Tour is starting to get off quick and easy, as your of the best a few actors located on the leaderboard can…
It was a gentle scolding at just the right time.
“Now that it’s over, I’m looking forward to getting some rest”.
