Jordan Spieth Wins Tournament of Champions
After a runaway performance at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, where Spieth reached the incredible feat of 30-under par in victorious fashion, he was asked about the comparisons to Woods that continue to proliferate.
Jordan Spieth has taken another step toward cementing his position as the world’s best golfer.

Rory McIlroy’s stated intention of regaining the world No 1 tag before the Masters in April looks such a more formidable challenge in the wake of Jordan Spieth’s eight-shot victory over a field including six of the top 10 players in the world.
He became only the second player to finish a 72-hole event on the PGA Tour at 30 under or better, emulating South African Ernie Els, who won the 2003 Tournament of Champions with a 31-under aggregate.
“Yeah, do the talking with my clubs”, Spieth said. “I knew there were going to be charges (from challengers) on this course, so getting up-and-down on the first hole was huge for me”. It’s not why I do what I do.
“It’s just solid golf, and I think you’re going to see a lot of that, just like he did past year”, Fowler said.
The next question is how good he can get.
The world No. 1 picked up right where he left off previous year and is well on his way to matching, if not exceeding, Woods’ remarkable feats.
First-round leader Patrick Reed finished in second place after a four-under-par 69 ensured a -22 score while Koepka slipped back to tied third with Brandt Snedeker. “That’s the way I’ll keep on thinking about it. It worked well this week”.
Reed, the defending champion at Kapalua, got within three shots with a birdie on the par-5 ninth. Then, Spieth rolled in a 35-foot birdie putt. Brooks Koepka, playing with Spieth in the final group, had a wild start to his round but never got closer than the five-shot deficit he faced at the start.
That requires a little context. Spieth collected his seventh win in his 77th start. Woods won his seventh PGA Tour event in his 38th start, and he had 18 wins in his first 77 tournaments. Apart from a possible slight lack of length off the tee, Spieth’s game is immaculate throughout and the only thing that could stop the two-time Major victor is the quality of opposition he has to encounter each week, which is arguably stronger than that encountered by Woods throughout his career.
“We got down here early to play a few practice rounds and I felt comfortable all week”, said Spieth, who received hugs and kisses after the final hole from his family – mom, dad and two sisters – who spent the week on Maui supporting Jordan.
“I just think (the Woods comparisons are) premature, but I’ll say that probably my entire career”, said Spieth on Sunday. I’m very excited with where I am at as a start to my career and what Tiger has done. “What Tiger’s done, I can’t imagine it being done again”, Spieth said.
“It is nice to be in that company any time you can get into the company of some of the Hall of Fame players. It’s fantastic being out here with what we’re trying to do, and doing it well”.
He now has closed out his last five wins with at least a share of the lead, and this was the third time in the last 13 months that he led by four shots or more.
