Jordan Spurns Mavericks for Clippers After Teammates’ Plea
Hey, could be worse. Discussing the free agent before a contract was signed earned Cuban a $25,000 fine. Redick and Paul Pierce visited Jordan at his Houston home on Wednesday (July 8) to persuade him to return… and he has.
A handshake deal, in this case, was no deal. It was a picture of Rivers and Jordan signing the contract.
Others sympathized with Mavs owner Mark Cuban, who negotiated the deal with Jordan.
Cuban turned to social media to vent, never mentioning Jordan by name.
The Clippers have always had the advantage of signing Jordan to a longer contract and more money, but earlier reports cited a variety of reasons for the defensive center leaving Los Angeles-from a supposed rift with Paul, to wanting to play a bigger role on a team. Paul told Jordan he had no idea he felt negatively about him and that he thought they were “brothers”. A professional basketball player who pledges his allegiance to an organization and then after having doubts won’t even face representatives of that organization is not overly committed.
On Wednesday, less than 24 hours before the NBA’s moratorium period was over, madness ensued, as members of the Clippers and Mavericks flocked to Houston to try and woo Jordan all over again. Now I’ll be the first to say I love everything Mark Cuban is about and I don’t blame him for anything he did in this whole situation. Staying put was the right decision and I know the Clippers weren’t going to be the same without him. “After going through the process DeAndre picked the Dallas Mavericks and told them he was coming”. One league executive said the Clippers were not happy the Mavericks were granted a dinner with Jordan in addition to a formal pitch meeting once the free-agency process started last week. Not everyone agreed. “If you had any ethics u would msg me and I will give u his address”.
Players have backed out on verbal deals before, but never as dramatically and destructively as Jordan did. Paul said he’d work to get Jordan more involved in the offense and that the Clippers couldn’t move forward without him.
But after the signing, Redick took to Twitter and changed his evaluation an A plus. “That was his decision as a man and that’s something he’ll have to stand with”.
Listen, we had one priority this summer, and that was to re-sign DJ, and we missed out on that. This isn’t the first time in National Basteball Association history that a player reneged on a verbal commitment. “But that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be looked at”.
Las Vegas bookmakers immediately installed the Sparks as a 1-to-200 favorites to win the WNBA title.
