Jose Bautista Contract Demands Outrageously Insane
The Blue Jays right fielder, who can be a free agent at the end of the season, told reporters Monday that he has given Toronto management a number and is waiting for an answer. The 35-year-old outfielder is coming off a 40-homer season in which he helped Toronto to an AL East title and its first postseason appearance since 1993.
Entering the final year of his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, Jose Bautista is expecting an extension offer to come soon, but doesn’t plan on negotiating the price. So, categorizing the previous contract as a “hometown discount” requires a little bit of revisionist history.
Reports on Monday night indicated that Toronto would pick up Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce in a three-team deal with the Angels, but that the trade later fell through because of medical issues.
Bautista has recently battled injuries and has hit above.
In the off-season, the Blue Jays picked up the 2016 option on Bautista’s contract for $14 million.
Atkins said he had spoken with Saunders about the ordeal personally.
Now he’s demanding a lengthy contract that would see him paid at baseball’s top rate into his forties. Former general manager Alex Anthopoulos managed to pry him and now retired reliever LaTroy Hawkins away for pitching prospects Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro and Jesus Tinoco plus shortstop Jose Reyes, a turn of events Tulowitzki said last October made it “tough for me now to trust anybody in this game”.
Buster Olney of ESPN says these comments are actually a blessing in disguise because they make it easier to cut ties with Bautista. Since it has only three wheels, I think we can fairly call this the world’s flashiest tricycle. “If someone plopped a player and it just worked for us and we said, ‘Wow, that would be a good guy for us that fits that description.’ But I think I’d be more apt to tackle that one going into next year at this same time”. If the Jays cannot or will not agree to the demands of their middle-of-the-order-but-not-getting-any-younger superstar, then they need to start preparing for a future without Bautista. However, Cabrera has hit.334/.417/.579 the past five seasons with just 12 fewer homers and 108 more RBIs that Bautista since 2011. “I’ve given this organization a 5-year hometown discount already”.
“I’m not trying to sound like it was adamant and I put down the law and I drew lines in the sand”, Bautista said.
“Feel great about Michael”, said Atkins.
As free agents, the two could command four- or five-year deals in the $100 million range from free-spending clubs.
The asking price was reportedly at least $150 million over five years.
