Jose, Katia are now hurricanes
NOAA is warning that storm surges could get as high as 18 to 23 feet, both in Florida and along the Georgia coast.
The season will end on November 30.
In its 7 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center said Katia now has maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. He estimated about $150 million in damage.
Earlier in the day, Katia was slightly nearer to the Mexican coast, and at about 10 pm CDT (0300 GMT) was moving east-southeast at around 2 miles per hour (4 kph), the center said.
It’s the first time since 2010 that three active hurricanes have been in the Atlantic. And they are very different storms.
Warm sea surface temperatures and a no-show El Niño were expected to contribute to an above-normal hurricane season this year in the Atlantic, NOAA said last month. If the layer of warm water isn’t at least 200 feet deep, a tropical storm could die before gaining hurricane strength. A hurricane begins as a tropical storm, when winds coming from different directions converge.
It made landfall near beach resort of Tecolutla in Veracruz. Later weakens to a tropical depression. Apart from Veracruz, Southern portions of the state of Tamaulipas may also feel the effects of the storm.
All eyes are on Hurricane Irma as it moves toward Florida, but it’s not alone.
The Category 1 storm is more than 1,000 miles from the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean.
Tropical Storm Jose has reached hurricane strength, but the system is not a threat to Bermuda at this time, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.
