Jose Mourinho on the defeat, the referee decisions and the future
Jose Mourinho has said his side are now more likely to aim for the top six rather than the Champions League spots after succumbing to defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Glenn Murray struck late at Stamford Bridge to see Bournemouth secure a famous win and condemn the Blues to an eighth league defeat of the season.
“Before this game I think it was fair to think and feel that with our quality and by winning three or four matches in a row we could push up to the kind of position where I was expecting to be”.
But despite going better in Europe, it’s their repeated failures in the Premier League that are starting to really annoy Chelsea supporters with their players not looking like they know what to do to get themselves out of the mire.
“It’s never easy to play English clubs in their own stadiums with the atmosphere there”.
“If our players are not able to give the maximum every day that is a problem”, he added. If you analysis match after match there are a few layers where it is hard to be consistent. “The creation is collective, but the finishing is something very individual and at this moment we’re not having that”.
“People must feel responsibilities”.
United were unable to follow Leicester and Arsenal’s lead as their goal-scoring problems resurfaced in a 0-0 draw at home to West Ham that left them level on points with City in fourth place.
But despite pushing for a precious goal, Chelsea couldn’t break down Eddie Howe’s disciplined side.
“He’s a volatile character, but I think the manager has nearly made a statement”.
Jose Mourinho “It’s a group phase game where normally you play for points”.
Chelsea also had a penalty decision turned down and Murray was slightly offside as he knocked the ball past Thibaut Courtois, who walked into the side for his first game after a two-month injury lay-off.
“The fact [Roman] Abramovich was at the game last night counts against Mourinho because the key now is the Champions League match which they can’t afford to lose”. On Wednesday we have to win to make sure we are first and qualified. I can just work and that is what I will do tomorrow to try and get us the result on Wednesday to get through to the next phase of the Champions League.
