Jose Mourinho’s three-word response to Man Utd’s Paul Pogba news
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Paul Pogba will have to fight for a starting berth at the club.
Pogba will arrive in Manchester on Tuesday to finally complete his protracted world record £90million move from Juventus – more than the £86m Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale three years ago. “He comes to a winning side”, he said.
“We left today 7 players out of the group, and they are very good players that work so hard to be [very good], so we have the options, we have the players, we have the squad”. And the Premier League is the ideal habitat for that.
“I hope he is going to want to return to United and prove he’s a top-class player”.
The Italian champions beat West Ham 3-2 in a friendly on Sunday at the London Stadium.
“United is the ideal club to bring him to the level that he wants to be”.
United have been widely reported as being prepared to pay a world record fee of 120 million euros (£101.78 million) for the 23-year-old who joined Juventus on a free transfer from the Old Trafford club in 2012.
Pogba’s arrival would secure the four signings Mourinho had set his sights on when he replaced Louis van Gaal at the end of last season.
The statement by Manchester United reads: “Paul Pogba has been granted permission to have a medical in order to finalise his transfer from Juventus to Manchester United”.
Mourinho said to the United press officer when asked about Pogba.
United signed Pogba to a deal in 2009, although they later had to be cleared, amid Le Havre’s protests, of any wrongdoing by a FIFA-appointed judge. “If you go to Real Madrid and Barcelona I think you are in trouble because the two big guys [Ronaldo and Messi] don’t let you develop”.
“I think United is the flawless club to bring him to the level he wants to be, and the Premier League is the ideal habitat”, he told a press conference. “I was told before the game that the medical was confirmed, and Juve allowed us”, he added.
The Juventus midfielder will become Jose Mourinho’s fourth signing of the summer after moves for Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
