Jose Reyes Arrested For Domestic Abuse
Former NY Mets player Jose Reyes is out on bail after he was accused of domestic violence.
Major League Baseball and the Colorado Rockies are looking into a report that shortstop Jose Reyes was arrested for assaulting his wife in Maui on October 31. According to the station, Katherine said she sustained thigh, neck and wrist injuries.
Police say that following the incident, Katherine Reyes had to be treated by medical personnel at the hotel and was then taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where she needed further medical attention.
The arrest happened way back on Halloween, but the Maui Police Department just announced that they arrested Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes at the Four Seasons Wailea for alleged spousal abuse. He’s New York’s franchise leader in triples and stolen bases, and had spent the previous two-and-a-half seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays before being traded in July.
Rob Manfred acknowledged the Reyes case at the GM Meetings in Florida, saying there’s “no timetable” yet for action, but that it’s “obviously a matter of concern” for the league.
The team is not allowed to issue punishment to the player, unless the commissioner defers to the team, meaning the Rockies could not discipline Reyes with the commissioner’s approval.
A behind-the-scenes video from Reyes’s Toronto days depicts his family life in idyllic terms; we’ve included it below.
Reyes previously played for the Miami Marlins and NY Mets.
“As evidenced by our Joint Domestic Violence Policy, Major League Baseball understands the seriousness of the issues surrounding domestic violence, and our Policey explicity recognizes the harm from such acts”, the MLB tweeted at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
“I’ll admit, we weren’t on this issue before”, Dan Halem, chief labor officer for Major League Baseball, told ThinkProgress in April.
“There’s a balance there, ” Manfred said. It is a policy that requires evaluation, counseling, a variety of other activities in addition to the disciplinary component.
Reyes could be the first player disciplined under the new policy, so his case is sure to be closely watched.
