Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks ‘Snowden’ And Government Transparency
The 33-year-old computer expert, who gained notoriety when he leaked classified documents detailing the USA government’s domestic surveillance programs, called in via Google Hangouts to answer questions about the Oliver Stone-directed film, Snowden.
Following a screening of Oliver Stone’s biopic Snowden at Comic-Con tonight, a panel discussion was held with the filmmaker and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley – who were joined via Google Hangout from Russian Federation by Edward Snowden himself.
Zachary Quinto feels Pokemon Go is limiting people’s face to face interactions.
San Diego Comic Con is in full swing, which means plenty of news about upcoming movies and favorite television shows. “But what I can say is some of my family members say, ‘He sounds just like you.’…”
Toward the climax of Oliver Stone’s Snowden, a powerful government official video links into a meeting room where he appears on a monitor that – for whatever reason – spans an entire wall.
Gordon-Levitt also had the opportunity to meet Snowden and he found the infamous ex-CIA employee to be “really warm and an optimist about the future of technology”.
Oliver Stone film Snowden gets support from Edward Snowden. “You get beat up, current event movies get you killed”. Like the previous one, this trailer tries to evoke a sense of all-consuming dread as it tells the true story of the famed, real-life NSA whistleblower who leaked classified documents to the press to expose illegal surveillance programs.
“He’s going through a painful, personal story”, said Stone.
After Snowden chuckled that “I’m not an actor.” he did call Gordon-Levitt and Woodley (who plays Snowden’s girlfriend Lindsay Mills) “champions for the public good” in reaching a new audience and getting people to talk about important political issues.
Diving into his time before the major events, when he served the country by enlisting in the United States Army Reserve and then working for the Central Intelligence Agency, it marks Stone’s first time shooting digitally, rather fittingly. According to Stone, the popular game is another form of privacy invasion. “I’ve been dying to ask him if he’s cool with what I’ve done with my voice”. Let us know in the comments!
Snowden opens in theaters September 16.
The trailer debuted at Comic-Con on Thursday, July 21, where a panel for the film was held.
