Joseph Randle: Dealing with Minor Oblique Issue
Bryant is the real star of the Cowboys’ offense, so even without Murray on the field the team should have no problem maintaining the same high-powered offense they had in 2014.
With many starters sitting out of the contest, expectations weren’t high for a great offensive display, but the lackluster effort has to be concerning for the Cowboys.
That may be the case, but the reality for the Cowboys is that they don’t have enough healthy bodies at the position with three of the five players sidelined and/or in varying stages of recovery from injuries. In fact, today’s camp session offered the best of both worlds: teaching and prepping for an opponent.
As usual, all three units took turns in 11-on-11. Retired Steelers player Rodney Harrison recently told Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio that McFadden was in worse shape than he was. During the season, NFL teams adhere to the same general format.
But older Cowboys also participated, to a degree.
Gus Johnson, the Lumberjacks all-time leading rusher, led the Cowboys with 35 rushing yards against the Chargers.
The Dallas Cowboys had an uneven start to their preseason campaign on Thursday night. McClain restarted a dormant career with a solid season and re-signed. It would be Lee’s first game since December 9, 2013, at Chicago.
Also back at practice was DeMarcus Lawrence. Last season for the New York Jets, Johnson played in all 16 games and ran 155 times for 663 yards and one touchdown. You’ll probably be fine with Darren McFadden and a handful of others. He spent the morning with his shoulder pads and helmet on, working hard with trainers. Romo had been seeing Johnson’s potential during the team’s last two practice sessions and he was said to be happy about it, saying that the rookie “has got a chance”. “I know I wasn’t let the ball go”.
In the absence of these three, Tyler Clutts ran as second team RB, behind Gus Johnson, who will start on Thursday, and in front of Lache Seastrunk.
That is what this camp is about for the running backs … seizing the moment, and just from the looks of the depth chart and injury report, nobody on the running back roster has yet to “seize the moment”. How much does a specific running back truly contribute to winning?
