Josh McCown is out for season with a broken collarbone
“But that’s all going to be part of the discussion that we’ll have later today”.
The only bright spot on the Browns roster is Johnny Manziel who was supposed to be starting last night against the Ravens. McCown finished his first year with the Browns completing 186 of 292 passes for 2,109 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. In true Cleveland fashion, however, the field goal was blocked and Will Hill returned it for the game winning touchdown.
That was bad enough for Manziel, who spent time at a rehab facility earlier this year, and who had been asked by team brass to stay close to the facility during the break. With 55 seconds left in the game, tied 27-27, the Ravens took over the ball on their own 38-yard line.
McCown will have x-rays taken Tuesday morning to determine whether there is a fracture; NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that McCown is still in significant pain.
“That’s very unfortunate. Josh means a lot to this team, whether it’s in the locker room, practice field, gameday, just the positive energy that he exuded, the leadership”.
Back-up quarterback Austin Davis came into the game for an injured McCown and made an instant impact to level the scores with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin.
His season began in St. Louis, where he started eight games last season, and moved to Cleveland shortly before the first regular season game.
McCown is fine as a placeholder, but the team definitely needs to find their quarterback of the future. Against all the odds, it appeared for a moment as if Cleveland could actually win against the Baltimore Ravens, as the team lined up for a game-winning 51-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in play. If the Browns do not start Manziel in this situation, don’t expect him to be in a Browns uniform next season. The Browns were intrigued with his size and potential but decided not to keep him. “I certainly have my own that I will keep private at this point, but that all is going to be part of the discussion we are going to have later today”. Their wide receiver corps has been banged up – Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel sat out Monday night – while free agent acquisition Dwayne Bowe has been a bust.
