Josh McCown out for rest of season with broken collarbone
With a backup quarterback, three injured offensive lineman and a lack of talent at the receiver position; Tony talked about how well the running backs played, “Everyone on the Cleveland Browns defense knew the Ravens were going to try and run the ball”.
If you thought the Cleveland Browns naming Johnny Manziel their third-string quarterback for Monday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens was merely a publicity stunt to save face after another partying video featuring Johnny Football surfaced last week, you’d be sorely mistaken.
Davis was 3-5 as a starter with the St. Louis Rams a year ago.
Pettine said he would “take everything into consideration” when deciding which quarterback starts.
“We’ve got two young guys who are more than talented enough to play in this league”.
The switch was necessary because Josh McCown, who spent most of the season absorbing body blows like a boxer’s sparring partner, broke his right collarbone Monday night against Baltimore and will miss the final five games.
Davis completed 7-of-10 passes for 77 yards, leading the Browns on a game-tying drive that was capped with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Travis Benjamin.
The 2-9 Browns are going to finish where they’re used to – at the bottom of the AFC North, losing six games in a row since a 2-3 start. Davis led the Browns’ comeback and gave Cleveland a shot at a game-winning field goal. Austin is the guy for this week. Pettine said he will decide who starts without influence from the front office.
Maybe this decision to go with Davis over Manziel for Sunday’s game at the Cincinnati Bengals is further punishment for Manziel, and maybe Pettine will pick his quarterback on a week-to-week basis.
At some point, Pettine might have to go back to Manziel. The Browns signed him two days later and signed him to a two-year contract extension on September 30.
The Cleveland Browns are having a nightmare season that keeps getting worse.
Pettine also refused to address rumors that Cleveland signed wide receiver Terrelle Pryor. During that span, Lewis has had just four starting quarterbacks, including Jon Kitna, Carson Palmer, Ryan Fitzpatrick (filling in for an injured Palmer), and Andy Dalton. He faced Cincinnati last month and completed 15 of 33 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown in a 31-10 loss but was more encouraging in his next game against the Steelers, when he threw for a career-high 372 yards.
