Josten Bundy: Marriage or Jail Is Judge’s Ultimatum to Texas Man
A Texas judge ordered a man charged with assaulting his girlfriend’s ex to marry the woman or face 15 days in jail.
Josten Bundy, 21, pleaded guilty on July 2 to assault with bodily injury for a February fistfight with the ex-boyfriend of Elizabeth Jaynes, 19, KLTV (http://bit.ly/1gQzs1e ) reported.
Aside from the truth that the judge feels like an entire fool who could be very happy with himself, and the truth that marriage isn’t an appropriate punishment for a criminal offense, Rogers additionally handled Jaynes like an object.
“Is she worth it?” When Bundy said yes, the judge proposed he married her. This is great because the two things have no bearing on one another.
Judge Rogers has refused to speak about the case or to defend some of his sentencing practices which included also demanding that Bundy write out Bible verses as part of his probation. Otherwise, it would be 15 days in jail.
Bundy says the media attention blew his mind. “My face was so red, people behind me were laughing”, she said. “[Rogers] made me stand up in court…”
Bundy said they talked about getting married just six months after they started dating. The judge told me, ‘Nope. However, the wedding day was not so wonderful as they had expected. Bundy’s dad and sisters couldn’t make it on such short notice. “It was just going to be kind of pieced together; I didn’t even have a white dress”.
It’s unclear as to where in the law Roberts found the legal justification to order a shotgun (prison bar?) wedding – an attorney contacted by KLTV described the sentence as “way out of left field”, adding that such a sentence would likely be overturned on appeal.
No word on whether the judge was invited.
Bundy and Jaynes pointed out that the petition language was incorrect because it misstates that Jaynes was “not asked if this was per her wishes”.
“[I felt] anger; I used to be mad”, Kenneth Jaynes stated.
Blake Bailey, a constitutional lawyer, explained that forced marriage is illegal and that a higher court would have struck down such a decision.
