Jozy Altidore told me Sunderland was a great club, says DeAndre Yedlin
Deadline day capture Yedlin has made just one domestic appearance since arriving at Spurs from MLS side Seattle Sounders in January, with the full-back largely limited to Under-21 football, other than his appearances for the USA.
But after completing two 90-minute outings for his country during the worldwide break – albeit on the right side of midfield rather than in his favoured right-back spot – Yedlin believes he can make an immediate contribution for Sunderland.
The 28-year-old, who has not played since the opening day of the season when he dislocated his shoulder at Leicester, will be joined by full-back DeAndre Yedlin, who was ineligible to face parent club Tottenham last weekend under the terms of his loan agreement. I think I have a better opportunity to get playing time up here and it is Barclays Premier League football which is great for a young player like myself. Obviously the weather isn’t the best but I’m sued to that coming from Seattle, it’s not a big deal for me.
“It was frustrating that the way the fixtures fell meant I wasn’t eligible for the game, but I am just looking forward now for the future with this team”. I have never played left mid but I would be willing to try it, and I will try anywhere, really. “I love a challenge”. “All the guys have been very welcoming and the staff have been great so I’m excited to get started”.
“The way we played, I have not seen many games from us that we have played this way, this system and attacking-wise and the spirit in the team, the passing – that’s a little bit the way I like, and now we need a few more goals at the right time”.
Hopefully this isn’t the case and Kyle Walker remains healthy for the rest of the season and Yedlin gets plenty of opportunities to feature in Dick Advocaat’s starting eleven week in and week out unless it’s against Spurs which will happen at least one more time – the reverse fixture in the Premier League.
“It’s all about balance with the full-backs, between going forwards and staying back”.
He said: “I have always said it doesn’t matter how you play, I always go for three points”.
He said: “If we need him, we could bring him in – that’s important, he can change a game”.
