Judge denies request by Cosby’s wife to delay deposition
Camille Cosby’s lawyers filed an emergency motion to delay her deposition, scheduled for today, pending an appeal to stay the proceedings.
Camille Cosby’s lawyer Marshall Searcy complained that the location will mean she will be “subjected to a parade through a sea of reporters” and open to “eavesdropping and gawkers”.
Bill Cosby has repeatedly denied allegations of sexual assault by dozens of women around the country, acts they say took place as far back as the 1960s.
Lawyers for the Cosbys attempted to quash the deposition subpoena, arguing that Camille Cosby does not have any relevant information. It goes on to assert that her testimony would create “an unnecessary media circus and personal security threat that serves no goal other than to harass and embarrass her”. The couple has been married for 52 years.
Camille had the option to claim marital privilege to evade the questions about private conversation, but it was ordered by the court that she should answer questions about the alleged multiple sexual assault claims.
The accusers named as plaintiffs in the defamation suit claim they were disparaged on Bill Cosby’s behalf after they accused him of sexual misconduct, and have called his wife to testify. They claim he portrayed them as liars, after they publicly accused him of sexually assaulting them. He has pleaded not guilty. He denies any wrongdoing. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 8.
“The Cosbys’ last-minute filing is the latest in a series of increasingly brazen attempts to interfere with the deposition of Mrs. Cosby”, the attorneys said in a filing. This includes the preparation of derivative works of, or the incorporation of such content intoother works. Anything said on the record during a deposition for the civil suit could be used as evidence in his criminal trial. Please see our terms of service for more information.
