Judge hears from patients who praise rogue cancer doctor

The sentencing will follow three days of emotional, gripping testimony in U.S. District Court by 22 of the estimated 550 victims, who looked Fata in the eye and called him “Dr. Evil”, a “monster” and “a cowardly bastard”, according to reports from the Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, NBC News and other media organizations.

Fata, 50, pleaded guilty last September to fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.

He has been accused in a criminal complaint of endangering people’s safety by falsely diagnosing cancer, prescribing unnecessary chemotherapy and other treatments, and of over treating patients who did require them.

It is said that member of every affected family was expected to het 10 minutes each on Tuesday to testify about how their lives had been changed by Fata. He had operated oncology centers in Clarkston, Bloomfield Hills, Lapeer, Sterling Heights, Troy and Oak Park.

A man with lower back pain was treated like he had blood cancer and given chemotherapy and radiation – even though tests showed he didn’t have cancer, an expert testified Wednesday at the sentencing hearing for Dr. Farid Fata. Prosecutors are seeking a 175-year prison term. “I ask that you give Dr. Fata – Mr. Fata, whatever you want to call him, to me he’s not a doctor anymore – the maximum time allowed”. He also choked up because he’s a cancer survivor.

The doctor, who lived in Michigan with his wife Samar and their three children, had allegedly prescribed over 9,000 unnecessary injections and infusions to more than 500 patients over a six-year span and received $62 million from Medicare; he billed for more than $150 million. Karen Baldwin, whose husband died in 2006 while under the doctor’s care, said in a statement that no one can undo what has happened in past.

Christopher Sneary was referred to Fata because of testicular cancer.

“It was my choice…” “You are repulsive. You disgust me”.

A former patient, Amanda Iodice, described Fata as “kind, caring, professional and very compassionate”. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison for his financial fraud.
