Judge Orders Man to Marry Girlfriend or Go to Jail
“I just wonder what would have happened if Hannah said no”, Bundy asked.
Smith County Court at Law Judge Randall Lee Rogers gave Bundy a choice in July after he was charged with assault for punching girlfriend Elizabeth Jaynes’ ex – marrying her as part of his probation or go to jail.
Bundy tells the Tyler television station that the man “had been saying disrespectful things” about Jaynes, so he challenged him to a fight and punched him twice in the jaw.
“I didn’t expect that many people to care, but when you read the story, so many people feel certain ways about marriage”, Bundy said. At first, Bundy was fine with being sent to jail, but asked that he be given an opportunity to inform his employer, a request that the judge denied.
Bundy and Jaynes say they plan to have a larger wedding once they save up enough money. “It was simply going to be sort of pieced collectively; I did not also have a white gown”. “I would have liked a spring wedding when it’s not too hot and not too cold”.
Bundy said he and Jaynes had talked previously of getting married. “None of my sisters got to show up, it was such short notice, I couldn’t get it together”.
“[I felt] anger; I was mad”. The bride stated, “I used to watch “Say Yes to the Dress” and all these exhibits and all of the clothes and take into consideration what variety of gown I might have”, Jaynes, 19, stated.
The judge was not available for a comment. “It sounds like the old days of shotgun weddings, but not even the judge is capable of enforcing, what he thinks is best for some people in his court”.
“We stay paycheck to paycheck”, Jaynes stated, including that she and Bundy had been collectively for 2 years.
“What if we [had said to the judge] we don’t want to get married right now and we’re not ready?” said Jaynes.
The couple are now planning to appeal the sentence in a higher court. Bundy and Jaynes decided to go forward with the wedding, but both were disappointed over the haphazard ceremony.
