Jurgen Klopp ‘angry’ as Andy Carroll sends Liverpool to defeat
West Ham could have scored more, with Manuel Lanzini hitting a post with a vicious, swerving drive and Simon Mignolet saving well from Aaron Cresswell’s deflected shot and another Carroll header.
You also had to wonder what might have been if Christian Benteke had been as good on the deck as he is in the air when Moreno set him up five minutes or so after the restart.
The England striker rose high above anybody else to direct his header back across goal and into the far corner of the net to ensure West Ham did the double over Liverpool, having won 3-0 at Anfield in August.
The Hammers also welcomed back Dimitri Payet, who as a second half substitute offered several reminders of the quality West Ham were missing during his two-month absence.
As lightweight Liverpool lost their way, the Hammers twice used their heads to achieve their first double over the Merseysiders in 50 years and leapfrog them into the lofty realms of fifth place – for a while at any rate. As Alberto Moreno was dispossed by a strong tackle by Michail Antonio near the corner flag, West Ham countered quickly with Enner Valencia flying down the right wing.
Liverpool nearly pulled one back with 10 minutes remaining but Lucas’ header was cleared off the line by Noble.
He admitted that it is their own responsibility and called it “not a day for being disappointed” rather “only a day for being angry” about their own performance – which he added “that’s what we are”.
Mignolet parried away from both Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate as West Ham went in search of a late third, while the unmarked Joe Allen should have done better for Liverpool, heading well wide when given a sight of goal. Carroll celebrated as though his goal had decided the title. At the end of the first half we had our moments but it was not enough.
“Hopefully we can get a good result on Tuesday, and if we’re still in the game then it turns into a proper cup game”.
“We had a lot of possession, we had bad luck in a few situations, but that’s not what I want to see to be honest”.
“We could and we need to do more because when you look to the two [previous] games, today it was something different”. You can not win a football game with 90 percent, even 95, nobody wants to see this.
On the other side, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was understandably happy, saying: “It’s a great win – I think we deserved it”.
“We had our moments, we played football and we tried – and that’s what we have to do”.
An infuriated Benteke saw see his last and best chance at goal blocked by Nigerian-born Italian defender, Angelo Ogbonna, who shielded the ball with his body, raising cries for a penalty from Liverpool players but the referee would do them no bidding.
