Jurgen Klopp asks Liverpool to calm down after draw against Southampton
Juergen Klopp’s first home Premier League match as Liverpool manager ended in a third successive draw as Southampton’s Sadio Mane equalised substitute Christian Benteke’s goal with five minutes left at Anfield.
The Liverpool boss has confirmed that he will make changes to his side but with the need to improve performances and start picking up results, Klopp could make only a handful of adjustments to ensure a strong team takes part.
“We created more chances but didn’t finish them and that’s disappointing”, United manager Louis van Gaal said.
“I have not been here long enough to understand everything about the meaning that English people attach to cups. I really want to win and that is the reason why we will change”. And that’s all the time you need to change your movements and all these things.
“But the other teams don’t wait for us”. We didn’t have the easiest opponents to play against.
The Reds’ Capital One Cup fourth-round tie has not come at the most ideal time as Liverpool are struggling with injuries, especially in attack, while they’re also yet to find a victory under their new boss. “He is in the Brazil national team, and the last game I think he played as a nine, so he can play there”, Klopp said.
“The fact another really good football brain has come into this country is good”.
“Sometimes you win the first game and you don’t know why, what is important is to win games in the future and know why”.
“I make the changes not because this tournament is not important for me, that’s important for me to say”. When I make changes I want to win the game, we don’t have time to watch how it may work.
The former Borussia Dortmund coach is concerned that his arrival has raised expectations too high and could lead to panic after he failed to win any of his first three games in charge at Anfield. It has always been a tough game when we have played Liverpool in the past and this one will be no different.
Jürgen Klopp’s side have already suffered four setbacks to Daniel Sturridge (knee), Jordan Rossiter (hamstring) Joe Gomez and Danny Ings (both ACL) since he was appointed on October 8th, but they remain hopeful that Benteke’s problem is only a minor one. “It is a self-fulfilling prophecy”, Klopp said.
The goal continued Southampton’s unbeaten away record away in the Premier League this season, even if Mane was not there at the end to celebrate it having been shown two yellow cards in quick succession.
