Jurgen Klopp explains why he didn’t go for Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp plays down suggestions that he could sign more players this summer, but will keep an open mind depending on how his current players perform.
Klopp managed Mkhitaryan at Borussia Dortmund and there was plenty of speculation suggesting the German would be reunited with the midfielder at Anfield.
It had previously been suggested that Klopp could seek to be reunited with Mkhitaryan, having brought the Armenia worldwide to Dortmund from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.
Jurgen Klopp has made a statement that the Liverpool squad that is now his and not the team he inherited from ex Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.
“The best player of the last season is good to know but it is more interesting trying to find out who will be the best next year”.
“If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney”, he said. That’s how it is.
“We will fight for everything, for every cup and what will happen in the end we will see.”Certainly at the moment we shouldn’t look for excuses and say things like “I need another year” or things like that. If you do that, you know their good, their bad and you wonder whether you will do it again”, said Klopp”.
“If you knew it now that would be a really cool transfer!” Where is the next step? Where is the next push for development?
“There are a lot of players who will only join a club when it is in the Champions League”.
One player Liverpool did miss out on was Mario Gotze, who ended up leaving Bayern Munich for Dortmund.
Klopp ended the club’s pursuit and completed a £30million deal for Sadio Mane instead.
Talks were held with the Germany worldwide but with the Reds unable to offer Champions League football, Gotze wouldn’t commit and wanted to keep his options open until after Euro 2016. “I’m not afraid of making decisions – it’s part of the job”, He added.
“I don’t know exactly how much we have spent so far. I never understand it”.
