Jurgen Klopp: We scored a very important goal and defended really well
The 23-year-old Brazilian has been absolutely on fire lately, scoring in each of his last three games – twice against Chelsea, once against Crystal Palace and once with an assist against Manchester City.
The next game, a trip to Southampton, is a tough test for the Reds, but it will be interesting to see Liverpool’s approach both towards the competition and the side, given this is the second time Klopp will have faced the Saints since his arrival on Merseyside. PA Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp (centre) celebrates with Alberto Moreno (right) after the final whistle, during the UEFA Europa League match at Anfield, Liverpool. Referee Anthony Taylor took note and for the second consecutive game James Milner accepted the responsibility and converted. “I don’t think it was ever going to be the best game to watch and it was all about getting the points”.
But perhaps the biggest positive was English duo Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge returning from injury.
Swansea improved after the break, and had the second half’s first chance on 50 minutes as Ki Sung-yeung pulled the trigger from outside the box, only for his shot to fly over the crossbar.
Liverpool came into this match with a tremendous victory last week at the Etihad Stadium.
After praising his players, Klopp insisted their goal was a “very important” one and said they “defended really well” to preserve the points – highlighting the lack of work Simon Mignolet had to do as a “big plus” for the entire team.
Perhaps Jordon Ibe should have scored when he was freed by Adam Lallana, only for Kyle Bartley to catch up and, in making a tackle, strike the foot of the post.
As for Origi: Did Liverpool really need to buy him?
“It is only a matter of time before results turn and you will see us flying again”.
“Football is not a sport where you can only play one way”, he said. Liverpool looked like they missed Coutinho at the front and Benteke was not up to the mark on the day. Hopefully those two can stay fit.
Then came the much needed breakthrough for Liverpool.
However, the Reds boss revealed that Coutinho has been training well, and Liverpool took a safety-first approach with him. He just needs to be on the pitch to continue that.
The introduction of Klopp has acted as a catalyst for improvement in terms of results, even if performances are not yet of the kind of consistent quality that would allow the new Liverpool manager to buy into the sense of momentum that others are experiencing.
