Just a few weeks’ of Zika funding remain — CDC Director
Since the summertime impasse, Zika has spread even more widely, and frustration is mounting from lawmakers representing affected areas.
The Associated Press quoted Frieden as saying the country is “about to see a bunch of kids born with microcephaly” in the coming months.
Zika can lead to microcephaly, a grave brain defect where a baby’s head is smaller. Dr. Christine Curry said that Jackson Memorial has delivered 15 women who have tested positive for the Zika virus.
A bipartisan consensus is emerging to fund the government through mid-December, though some House tea party conservatives are opposed and want a longer duration for the measure to avert a lame duck session of Congress.
The Miami area has almost 60 cases of locally transmitted Zika infection. Nearly 3,000 people in the continental USA have been found to have Zika, and the total is far higher since most people don’t display symptoms.
Florida health officials have not reported a locally transmitted Zika virus case since Tuesday and the tally remains at 56. ULV sprayers dispense very fine aerosol droplets containing small quantities of active ingredient insecticide that drift through the air and kill mosquitoes on contact.
At least 604 people have been diagnosed with the Zika virus in Florida, with the vast majority being exposed while in other countries. But because of the risk of microcephaly, World Health Organization says men and women returning from areas where Zika infections are ongoing are “advised to wait at least six months before trying to conceive to ensure that possible virus infection has cleared”. “Zika is real, and while we don’t understand it fully, that is not a reason to dismiss its impact”, says a local doctor.
On July 29, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed the first-ever transmission of the Zika virus by local mosquitoes in the United States, bringing the number of Zika cases in the 50 United States to 2,517, including 584 pregnant women.
“Despite relentless efforts by the city and the county, this new discovery shows that the Zika threat continues to grow”. The CDC has issued a travel advisory for pregnant women to avoid the Zika hot Zones in Miami-Dade County.
The Department of Health yesterday disclosed that the sixth and latest Zika virus infection patient in the Philippines has fully recovered.
The CDC also is advising pregnant women not to travel to an area where active Zika transmission is ongoing, and to use insect repellent and wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts if they are in those areas.
The Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County held the event to share the most current information with its staff and agency partners, including several Tampa Bay area social service and medical providers.
