Just in Case: San Diego Chargers Apply For Los Angeles Trademarks
In the latest sign that the San Diego Chargers are prepared to join the Rams in Los Angeles, the team reportedly applied to trademark multiple names in relation to the city that resides a bit further north in California.
The NFL has given the Chargers until March 23 to decide whether they want to move to Los Angeles for the 2016 season. In addition, they’re seeking a trademark for “LA Chargers”.
It is going to cost owner Stan Kroenke $550 million to move the Rams to Los Angeles, but he has already made back a lot more than that, based on the increased value of the franchise alone. The team filed a trademark application for the “Los Angeles Chargers” and “L.A. Chargers”. A joint statement issued after the meeting indicates both teams agreed to not publicly discuss details of the meeting.
The San Diego Chargers are letting their fingers do the talking. The NFL has given the Chargers until January 2017 to negotiate a partnership with the Rams in Inglewood to possibly share a facility. They were the team left out in the cold following the vote last week. We know this because the Rams and Chargers put out what may be the shortest press release in history on Monday.
However, the only content is an embedded video posted December 6 of the Chargers’ and Oakland Raiders’ plan to build a stadium in Carson, which owners ultimately rejected.
“We now understand anew why Inglewood is known as the ‘City of Champions, ‘ because they got it done”, Ridley-Thomas said.
However, the team would get a brand new stadium, which is what it seems to be after more than anything else.
