Justin Bieber, One Direction, Paris get spotlight at 2015 American Music Awards
There was a distinctly Canadian flavour to the 2015 American Music Awards on Sunday night.
Taylor Swift and One Direction were the big winners at this year’s American Music Awards.
The “On the Floor” hitmaker was delighted to take to the stage at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles as she revealed the annual ceremony was one of her inspirations to pursue a career in performing.
That guy professing his love for Jennifer Lopez during the host’s sizzling dance medley at the top of the show?
Collecting the artist of the year trophy, which they have won for two consecutive years, Louis Tomlinson said: “Wow, this is incredible, to win two years in a row”.
Actor-musician Jared Leto made a moving tribute to the 130 victims of the deadly November 13 attacks across Paris, specifically the 89 who died at the Bataclan concert hall, where he said he and his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, had performed “a lovely, peaceful” show earlier this year.
“Make a few noise for Prince, ladies and gentlemen”, the singer said after picking up favorite album – soul/R&B for “Beauty Behind the Madness“. She won song of the year for “Blank Space“, favourite album- pop/rock for “1989” and favourite artist-adult contemporary.
“Ariana Grande was the victor of best Pop/Rock female artist award while One Direction was the victor in the Favorite Duo or Group – Rock/Pop. The Weeknd” picked awards in the Favorite Album – Soul / R&B category as well as Favorite Male Artist for Soul/R&B.
She said she has watched the awards show every year since she was a kid and recalled performances and musicians she’s watched over the years, including Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. British sensation Ed Sheeran was honored as Favorite Pop/Rock Male artist.

Bieber kicked off his performance with a stripped-down rendition of “What Do You Mean”, before launching into his EDM collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, “Where Are Ü Now” and ending with a stormy version of “Sorry“.
