Justin Bieber scores five wins at 2015 MTV EMAs
Pop singer Justin Bieber has dominated the MTV European Music Awards after scooping up awards at last night’s ceremony in Milan. “I just feel it’s awesome to be recognized for my music”, Bieber, who was up for six awards, told the crowd.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, she said: “I just got off of shooting an action film, hence the cane because I’ve torn my leg. I just tore my calf muscle five times, no big deal”. Thanks to his massive fan following that he additionally achieved the Biggest Fans Award following a tough battle against bands like One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer and solo competitors like singer Taylor Swift and Katy Perry.
The event was hosted by Singer Ed Sheeran and “The Orange Is New Black” star, Ruby Rose.
Meanwhile, Duran Duran was honoured with the first ever MTV Video Visionary Award.
“Stitches” singer Shawn Mendes beat out British singers Jess Glynne and James Bay, who additionally carried out on stage, for the Best New Act.
When Bieber accepted his award for Best Look, his fifth award of the night, all Bieber could muster was, “Wow”, before adding, “I don’t know what to say”. Coldplay took home the Best Rock Award.
Despite her many nominations, Swift only won one award, for Best Song. Rihanna won best female performer while Nicki Minaj took best hip hop. Officially the most awarded artist in MTV EMAs history, it’s a record he can be especially proud of, given the many who hastily – and shamefully – wrote him off. Rihanna and One Direction, who won one award apiece, similarly didn’t appear in person or via video. “We are not on a major label, we don’t have a major budget – what you guys give to us we give back to you. without you this would be not possible, we love you guys, thank you”.
Pharrell Williams closed the evening with a rousing version of “Freedom”, accompanied by a troupe of colorfully dressed dancers.
Stand out performances included Ellie Goulding, who emerged from a diamond that opened around her as she performed and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and YouTube star Tori Kelly, who performed a duet of Pink’s hit Just Give Me A Reason.
Winners in the EMAs are selected by fans from across the continent.
