Justin Thomas crowned FedExCup victor at Tour Championship
On face value, it seems preposterous that two completely different golf tours would be able to combine, especially since they are played on different continents.
Any of the 30 players in the tour Championship can theoretically win the FedEx Cup, but only those in the top five in the standings are assured of doing so with victory. Bill Haas at No. 25 is the worst seed to win the FedExCup. The last time the Tour Championship victor did not claim the FedEx Cup title was in 2009 when Phil Mickelson won the tournament and Tiger Woods claimed the overall trophy.
“I was so nervous on that putt, and I thought I missed it”, Schauffele said on the NBC broadcast.
A bogey-free round-of-the-day 65 took Henley to 10 under, with Kisner moving alongside him after matching Casey’s closing birdie.
Of the top five players who entered the Tour Championship in control of their own fate, Spieth is still projected in the top spot. He’ll need a victory and a lot of help to capture the FedEx Cup title and the $10 million prize. Over the last three seasons, he’s become a mainstay at the top of PGA TOUR leaderboards, racking up 23 top-ten finishes.
That next season starts 11 days later.
He shot a 5-under-par 65 to build a two-shot lead, leaving him one round away from his first PGA Tour victory in eight years and 144 events.
“I really felt like I played or had the opportunity to really go decently low today or post a pretty solid number out there”, the 24-year-old Thomas said. One area of dissent is that the current system works fine.
Jim Furyk had his hat on backward when he saved par from a bunker in the rain.
Kisner and Schauffele, meanwhile, would each have to win the tournament and have several other dominos to fall to win the FedEx Cup.
The rest have been decided by three shots or more. The final group going at 1:50 p.m. should set up a finish well before 6 p.m. on NBC with time for all the trophy presentation formalities. And he shot 9-under-par 63 in the third round of the U.S. Open, the best single round in relation to par in major championship history. There have been 43 regular-season and three playoff events so far.
Casey has the best first round scoring average on the PGA Tour this year but a final round average of more than 76 strokes speaks for itself. As usual, there will be plenty of memories. He has 17 birdies and one eagle in the competition. Mark O’Meara is a five-time victor of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
