Justin Trudeau makes an impression in worldwide debut
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made good on his election-campaign promise to confront “the bully that is Putin” when he had a brief conversation with the Russian President on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Antalya, Turkey.
“There’s a sense that the speed with which this is taking place will be at the expense of the security of Canadians”, said Darrell Bricker, president of Ipsos.
Trudeau has been ambivalent on the massive Pacific trade deal Obama is pushing, and he reiterated to Obama on Thursday that he planned to follow through on his campaign pledge to end Canada’s part in the air campaign against Islamic State – though his nation will ramp up efforts to train local fighters in Iraq and Syria.
Canada’s Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the Liberal government will be mindful of the recent attacks in Paris and Beirut when screening refugee applicants, with security considerations being a priority.
The administration refuted reports Wednesday that it is delaying its plan to shutter Guantanamo, but Mr. Obama said the White House is still working with Congress to reduce the detainee population. “I’m sure Michelle’s going to want to visit with Canada’s new first lady”, Obama said.
“But what Barack pointed out to me about how fast his daughters grew in the seven years since that first night of his electoral victory really struck home to me”, Trudeau said. “We truly read each other’s minds, on climate and development assistance for example”, Park said at their APEC bilateral meeting.
Canada, he says, could contribute more effectively by training Kurdish troops in northern Iraq.
Obama wasn’t the only one charmed by Trudeau.
The optics for Mr. Trudeau “look very problematic for a government that’s come to power promising that, Canada is back, and one of the first things Canada does is be offside with its major alliance partners”, said Kim Richard Nossal, an expert in worldwide relations and defense policy at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. A separate Ipsos poll conducted in both the United States and the United Kingdom found this number jumps to 81 per cent, fuelling debate in the U.S.to halt refugee resettlement programs.
Compliments for the 49-year-old Mexican also were plentiful on the Web, with one Twitter user asking, “President Peña Nieto, how did you get so cute?!” Now, to the envy of scores of hyperventilating media “professionals,” he can add Justin Trudeau (or “Justin”, as the prez likes to say) to that list.
President Obama said Thursday that Syrian refugees are no more unsafe to the US than tourists, and he accused Republican presidential candidates of stoking fears about the refugees and closing the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention center to score political points. “We are both soon to be signatories to the TPP agreement”, Obama told the leaders’ joint press conference. Obama said oil prices are likely to remain low for a few time, presenting what he said was an opportunity for companies to diversify. I know Canadians are incredibly inspired by your message of hope and change.
