Justin Trudeau say no thanks to the idea of a coalition
NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair left the door open to a few sort of post-election arrangement that would see New Democrats working with Liberals to oust Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper – but Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is not interested. “It’s like we all have collective amnesia – soon someone will tell me Justin Trudeau will legalize pot”, said Capstick.
“The Liberal voters that I know are as fed up with Stephen Harper as anybody”, said Cullen in an interview on Wednesday.
The NDP says a majority of 50 per cent plus one would suffice.
There was almost a coalition seven years ago but the prime minister blocked the effort by asking the governor general to prorogue parliament. That saved Harper from losing a confidence vote and having to call an election. That was unpalatable to the Liberals.
“It’s not new from Nathan and it’s not the first time the subject has been raised but we should be talking about policies”, said Robin Sears, a principal at Earnscliffe strategy group and long-time NDP advisor, who added that Cullen is entitled to express his long-held view.
“The Liberals signed a deal”. He has since suggested those comments were intended to indicate only that he wouldn’t agree to any electoral co-operation with the Liberals during a campaign.
While rare in Canada, coalitions are common place in democracy’s in Europe.
