Justin Trudeau took oath as 23rd Prime Minister of Canada
Justin Trudeau was sworn in as Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister today before a packed crowd, nearly 50 years after his father took on the job.
Trudeau is the second-youngest prime minister in Canada’s history. Three Indian-origin men and one woman are part of the new cabinet that has 15 women and 15 men ministers.
Justin Trudeau, the 42-year-old son of charismatic former prime minister Pierre Trudeau who is credited with opening Canada to new immigrants in the 1970s, led the Liberal Party to win 184 seats in the 338-member House of Commons.
“But I know that Canadians expect of us to come together and put forward a team that is going to be able to deliver on the change, on the ambitious plan for this country that the Liberal party ran on and that’s exactly what we’re going to deliver”.
The Harper government severed diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012. She has been hailed as the first Muslim Canadian in cabinet. The Huffington Post pointed to the fact that under Mr Harper, reporters were banned from waiting outside the cabinet room, where they had previously interviewed ministers for decades. “I will be working very hard to achieve that goal”.
He is notably more liberal than his predecessor, with his policies focusing on climate change, the economy, welfare, the refugee crisis and decriminalising cannabis. The boy had relatives in Canada.
Trudeau said that his new cabinet would serve Canadians better and enhance accountability, according to Newsweek. “That’s a first. There’s never been a presence in cabinet that strong”. It’s young as well, with most of the cabinet members under 50.
But the new faces are not just limited in Canada’s cabinet.
Sajjan, a former lieutenant-colonel and combat veteran with Canadian Armed Forces, and a former detective constable with Vancouver Police Department, was named Minister of National Defence.
Women make up half of the Cabinet.
When asked why he wanted gender parity (fancy word for 50:50 representation) in his cabinet, he merely shrugged and said ‘Because it’s 2015’. Trudeau has said improved environmental performance is critical for the approval of projects such as TransCanada Corp.’s proposed Energy East pipeline, though how he intends to proceed remains unclear. Trudeau said he wants to re-establish relations.
Trudeau has a busy agenda ahead with four global conferences to attend, including the G-20 summit in Turkey and the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris. LeBlanc said Trudeau wants a promised middle class tax cut in place January 1. We made a commitment to provide more direct help to those who need it by giving less to those who do not.
