More than 30 (mostly Republican) governors have said they will not take refugees in their states-despite the fact that states probably don’t have this authority, in governor Mike Pence recently successfully diverted a family to Connecticut-and two bills meant to keep out refugees have been voted on in Congress.
The first Syrian refugee family to arrive at Canada Migrations, Dec. 11.
“Our message on behalf of the arts community to newcomers is ‘welcome, we are so happy to have you in our communities, we welcome you to our spaces, performances and events when you are ready”, he said.

This is just the first wave of Syrian refugees arriving in Canada.
Before the refugee families headed to their hotels, they were suited up with winter coats, as Canada’s climes are just a bit different from those in Aleppo and Damascus, where most of the refugees are from. “Now, we feel as if we got out of hell and we came to paradise”.

All of the Syrians on board are sponsored by private groups, many of whom had filed the necessary paperwork months ago in order to bring in some of the estimated 4.3 million Syrians displaced by the ongoing civil war in that country.
