Jutanugarn earns her first major
This year, she led the first major – the ANA Inspiration – by two shots with three holes to play, but ended up fourth. Jutanugarn took the Women’… Lee, her playing partner, had shot three consecutive birdies to reduce the gap from six shots to one, while Martin hovered menacingly two shots behind.
Jutanugarn birdied six of the first 14 holes and closed with four pars to reach 16-under 200 and break the tournament 54-hole scoring record.
“My caddie helped me a lot”. She chipped in from 90 feet for birdie on No. 8 and made a 30-footer on 10 on the Marquess Course, the hilly, forest layout that is a big change from the usual seaside links. Jutanugarn took the Women’s British Open titl… “I don’t feel like it’s this easy”.
Moriya Jutanugarn, the 22-year-old sister of Ariya, shot 75 and finished in a tie for 43rd place at even-par 288.
Jutanugarn had a 69.
Jutanugarn was in cruise control until she dropped a shot after finding sand on the ninth, yet after a tidy front nine of 35, she was still four ahead of Martin, who hit the turn in 34.
I think I got mad after that hole, Jutanugarn said. “I like everything here”. “So I actually don’t know what the others are doing and don’t know where they are at”. It really matters if my putting is working or not.
“This is really important for me and for golf in Thailand”, said Jutanugarn, whose next stop is the Olympic Games in Rio.
“It was one of my best rounds for a while”, said Matthew.
“I played a lot with her a year ago. It’s just getting myself there and giving myself a chance”.
“That was my heart and my soul out there”, Martin said. “Parts of it remind me of the Pacific Northwest but there are some linksy styles in there, some of the fescues, some of the bunkering”. After my first tournament on tour, my goal is I really want to win a major. The American won in 2013 at St. Andrews.
“It feels great”, said Ariya Jutanugarn. “Just a few too many mistakes”. “Usually in these things, if you can get out there and post a number, that’s usually what wins”.
Ko could have been further up the leaderboard, until a double-bogey at the 18th rather spoiled her otherwise flawless card.
The 41-year-old has been in vintage form all week at a venue where she says she is comfortable.
Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb, tied for the lead at 9-under par, were 40 minutes from teeing off in the third round when clouds gathered, the sky rumbled and the horn sounded to suspend play.
Seminole’s Brittany Lincicome shot 72 and is in an eight-way tie for 59th at 1-over 217.
