Juventus, Atletico Madrid, PSG into last 16

Antoine Griezmann bagged a brace to hand Atletico Madrid a 2-0 win over Galatasaray at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday evening.

A draw with Atletico will simply not be enough for the Turkish side as they would lose on the head to head even if they beat Astana and Benfica beat Atletico in the last game week.

PSG romped to a 5-0 victory in Malmo, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring against his boyhood club, as they confirmed their place in the knockout draw along with Real Madrid from Group A.

Victory would get the job done for Diego Simeone’s side but finishing top of the table, and thus securing a theoretically easier last-16 tie, will be more hard considering they now trail by two points to Benfica whose next opponents are bottom club Astana.

Group A leaders Real Madrid, who punched their ticket for the Round of 16 earlier, withstood a ferocious late comeback by Shakhtar Donetsk to win 4-3 on Wednesday.

The hosts kept alive their hopes of a third-place finish in Group D and Europa League football as they stormed into a commanding lead, courtesy of strikes from Lars Stindl, Fabian Johnson and Raffael.

The Croatian forward struck in the 18th minute, holding off Nicolas Otamendi’s challenge to volley the ball in from close range following Alex Sandro’s cross from the left.

Wolfsburg are now top of the group after Andre Schuerrle came off the bench to provoke an Igor Akinfeev own goal and score one of his own in a 2-0 defeat of CSKA Moscow in Russian Federation.

United would have qualified with a win, but will now face the tougher task of claiming their place in the knockout round in their final match at VfL Wolfsburg on December 8.
