Juventus – Manchester City Predictions
City have fared badly – twice being drawn against Barcelona – after finishing as group runners-up in the past but Pellegrini looked on the positive side after the loss in Italy. Atletico Madrid reached 10 points from five matches in Group C, while Galatasaray was eliminated with four points. They are already guaranteed a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League.
It’s hard to believe but City has never been past the final 16 in the Champions League.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has explained that he is unsure about the extent of Joe Hart’s injury.
City, who have already qualified for the last 16 of the competition, face the Italian champions looking for revenge following their 2-1 defeat to Juve at the Etihad in September.
In Mandzukic and Morata, Juventus have two excellent strikers that are capable of tormenting any team in Europe, so cutting off the service to them will be important to City’s chances here.
Hart said after the game the problem was “nothing – just a little bit tight”, but he and Pellegrini will have to wait until after assessment back in Manchester to learn the full extent of the injury.
Man City (4-1-4-1): Hart (Caballero 81); Sagna, Demichelis, Otamendi, Clichy; Fernando; Navas, Toure, Fernandinho (Delph 60), De Buryne; Aguero (Sterling 69).
Yaya Toure’s strike was not far off target, while Lichtsteiner only hit the side-netting after a strong run.
Pogba could not be contained and a brilliant backheel to release Mandzukic caught City completely unaware, but the visitors were rescued by an offside flag.
City were made to pay for that miss two minutes later, as Mandzukic turned home Alex Sandro’s cross with a volley from close range.
A solitary goal that came from Croatian Mario Mandzukic was enough to send the Citizens back to England with no points and also fell to second in Group D.
Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Pellegrini also lamented missed chances from his team after Fernandinho and Raheem Sterling passed up gilt-edged opportunities.
Claudio Marchisio’s awful backpass was intercepted by Aguero, who tried to round the Juventus goalkeeper but Buffon did brilliantly to block the Argentina forward and force the ball out for a corner.
One chance in particular summed up City’s Kompany-free back line perfectly – substitute Alvaro Morata being set free down the inside-right channel without a single City defender within yards of him.
“We are realistic that a draw in Turin is a good result for us – a win or a draw – but we are going to turn up with every intention of winning the game”.
