Kane to appear in court Saturday
According to the charging documents filed against the attorney general, Kane released secret grand jury material, conspired with at least one person to obtain information about the investigation against her and threatened to fire staffers who proved disloyal. Stephens says there’s only one thing left for the State’s Attorney General to do after being charged in a multiple count indictment Thursday.
An attorney for the 49-year-old Kane says she plans to plead not guilty. “Just the filing is going to make it hard for her to do her job as the top law enforcement officer while she has to defend herself against these charges, and they’re serious charges”.
Kane, 49, was elected in 2012, becoming the first Democrat and the first woman to become attorney general since the post became elective in 1980. She’s later accused of lying under oath in her statement. Moreover, the evidence shows that Attorney General Kane undertook these actions seeking vengeance and retribution against other law enforcement professionals. Kane fired four officials, and a state Supreme Court justice also resigned in the scandal.
Kane further said she would not be resigning from her office.
Governor Tom Wolf has asked for her resignation.
“I will not allow them to discredit me”, she wrote in a 2014 email to her media strategist. With drug cartels and a heroin epidemic endangering the lives of our citizens on a daily basis, we can not afford to have such a distraction impairing the operation of the attorney general’s office. On Monday, Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was charged with securities fraud. Relying heavily on her trucking magnate husband’s wealth, the Scranton native campaigned as a disrupter of the status quo and pledged to investigate whether politics played a role in the three years it took to investigate and charge former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky with child sex abuse crimes. “In explaining her conduct to the grand jury she uttered no lie”.
