Kansas City, Kansas, police captain killed after drive-by shooting

At 1:32 p.m., police received a call from a citizen that someone from a burgundy Grand Prix was firing shots, and the auto had three or four peoplen the vehicle. Authorities say the attack wasn’t a planned ambush.
There will be a candlelight vigil outside of KCK City Hall Wednesday to honor Captain Melton.
Officials with the Wichita Police Department are considering pairing up patrol officers again. It also comes after the deaths of police officers in shootings in Dallas and Baton Rouge, La.
Wagle said the Democratic president has painted law enforcement officers as “people of bias”.
“It’s just important to show that we are all humans and we all care about each other”, he said.

– A Kansas City, Kan. police officer was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while responding to a reported drive-by shooting.
Zeigler described the 46-year-old as a “big personality” and “gregarious”. Melton responded as backup. “The anti-hate speech has got to stop because the consequences are real”.
An emotional Mr Zeigler also thanked the community for their support.
Outside of the hospital where Melton was brought, local Baptist preacher Jimmie Banks – a friend of the city’s mayor – sat dejected on a bench, head lowered, after attending Tuesday’s news conference.
When Capt. Robert Melton came to assist the officers, one of the suspects opened fire, hitting him, police said.
Wyandotte County Commissioner Harold Johnson said a short prayer before the news conference began.
In the lobby of police headquarters, people left cards and flowers on a table draped in blue cloth. Courtney said she had known Melton for almost 20 years and that he was “a wonderful man with a heart of gold”.
A police spokeswoman said the suspect was questioned Tuesday evening, along with another person suspected in the initial drive-by shooting.
