Kansas City police: 1 dead, 7 hurt after shooting, crash
Six children who were in her vehicle were critically injured after the accident and taken to a nearby hospital, but officials said early Wednesday that they were expected to survive.
Sgt. Kari Thompson with Kansas City Police says 30-year-old Mariana Hernandez-Gonzales was fatally shot after trying to flee gunfire between two other cars in Kansas City, Missouri.
The woman was driving in her auto with the six children, when it got between two other vehicles that were exchanging gunfire.
“It hurts my heart”.
“An innocent vehicle driving in this area, unbeknownst to them, somehow got into an accident with these individuals, that passenger in that innocent vehicle is deceased here at the scene” said Sgt.
“Mothers are burying their children. This is not right”, Thompson said. “Whether you live in the urban core, north or south of the river, this is still your city and we all have to take accountability to do what we can to stop the violence in our city. Let’s not turn a blind eye to this area”, she said.
According to the latest available data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2013, Kansas City ranks as the fourteenth most risky city in the country. Homicide in Kansas City dropped nearly 25 percent previous year and police are hoping these numbers keep going down.
She said efforts to curb crime rest with everyone.
