Kansas Fans Remain at Allen Fieldhouse to Give Buddy Hield Standing Ovation
Kansas continued to find ways to knot the game, and as the game wore on Oklahoma, untimely turnovers bit the Sooners and OU fell short of a rare win in Lawrence, Kan.
If voters have any brains, neither will drop at all.
The Sooners had a final chance, but Hield missed a 3-pointer right before the buzzer, and Kansas had survived to win their 32nd straight home game, and 15th straight in Lawrence over OU. Kansas trailed by 19 points in the second half before All-American Thomas Robinson took over for the Jayhawks.
The 40th matchup between the Nos. He had the ball stolen as he lost control on a spin, leading to two Devonte’ Graham free throws, and then had the inbounds pass stolen, leading to two Frank Mason free throws – although officials failed to grant Hield enough space to get the ball in.
Zach LeDay scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and blocked London Perrantes’ attempt to tie the game in the final seconds and Virginia Tech stunned No. 4 Virginia at home.
Neither team scored in the last 2:34 of the second overtime, forcing a third extra period. The last came in the 1957 title game when North Carolina defeated Kansas with Wilt Chamberlain as the Jayhawks starting center.
Kansas was up for the task though as in the three overtime game they put up 109 points in front of a rockin’ crowd at Allen Fieldhouse and did it with multiple guys. Barring injury, Hield figures to move up quite a bit by the time his Sooners career ends after this season. But in the end, Kansas (13-1) prevailed as a couple of late turnovers doomed Oklahoma down the stretch.
Hield played 54 of a possible 55 minutes.
The Jayhawks looked like they would end it in regulation after Hield made two free throws with 21.3 seconds left to tie the game at 77-77.
I’m pretty sure KU stuck with the same lineup in all three overtimes and at the end of regulation. If these were the top two teams in the country on Monday afternoon, then they did nothing during the game on Monday to show that they’re not the top two teams on Tuesday.
Both Kansas and Oklahoma proved over the weekend why they should be considered the class of the ultra-competitive Big 12 this season, if not all of college basketball.
“You just had to go out there and grind it out and make plays”, Hield said.
Jordan Woodard made six three-pointers and had 27 points for the Sooners, who were trying to extend their best start in 28 years. Hield scored a career high 46 points, the sixth best scoring performance is Sooner history.
The takeaways led to breakouts as Kansas (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) gained the lead with two free throws by Graham with 15.2 seconds left before Mason added two more with 8.6 seconds remaining.
Charles Johnson led the Golden Lions with 13 points.
“I told coach I was going to try to get him his fifth foul so he’d quit guarding me so tight”, Hield said.
Kentucky Wildcats (11-2): The loss to Ohio State was concerning for a far superior Kentucky team but they rebounded by beating Louisville Ole Miss to start SEC play. Ryan Spangler added 14 points and 18 rebounds.
There are three unbeaten Division I teams and they are sprinkled throughout the Top 25. 23 Cincinnati, rallied from its big loss to Villanova last week by beating No. 9 Butler on Saturday.
