Kansas State vs. UTSA Score, Recap & Analysis
On a 3rd-and-6 from the Kansas State 17-yard line late in the second quarter of Saturday’s game, Morgan caught a pass two yards past the line of scrimmage.
Coming off a 42-32 loss to No. 22 Arizona in which they gained 525 total yards on 95 plays, UTSA was limited to 229 yards on 62 plays by Kansas State. UTSA settled for a 51-yard field goal from Daniel Portillo.
More advantageous field position in the second half produced scores on five straight possessions and the contest started looking more like what’s expected when a program that has won more Big 12 games than any other over the past four years meets a program that has existed for that long. It was Cantele’s first significant action since losing the kicking job early last season to Matthew McCrane, who was injured on an extra-point attempt Saturday.
“I was just antsy, nervous all day”, Hubener said.
Redshirt freshmen Justin Silmon and Winston Dimel both scored touchdowns in the second half as well.
No flash, nothing brash and a pinch of dash from Joe Hubener, the junior who was good enough to start at quarterback for one of college football’s top programs without having opened a game there in college or high school. Hubener became Snyder’s best option at quarterback when starter Jesse Ertz suffered a season-ending knee injury on his first play of last week’s opener. He carried the ball 17 times for a team-high 58 yards and a touchdown.
“Outside of that, he managed the offense very, very well”, Snyder said. “He handled his part of the running game well. Overall, he did good things, but we still have some growth on some aspects of the passing game”.
K-State, winning its first non-conference road game since Miami in 2011, finished with 418 yards of total offense – 175 rushing and 243 passing. While the Roadrunners were able to gain some easy yardage on the ground to start the game, KSU’s defense hammered down to obliterate the running game throughout the majority of the affair.
A strong defensive performance kept UTSA in the game but UTSA’s offense provided fans with a flashback to 2014 with a pitiful offensive performance. “I thought we played smart”.
