Kasich’s NH showing could be tough to convert into more wins
On Tuesday, establishment-minded Republicans from New Hampshire expressed a mix of frustration and shame that it was their state that delivered Trump’s first victory.
Trump also benefits because there are so many other contenders arrayed against him that they are splitting the anti-Trump vote, allowing him to win with only about one-third of those casting ballots. Cruz, too, had a post-Iowa bonanza. Kasich’s 16 percent New Hampshire finish wouldn’t be good enough to nab him a single delegate in any of those states.
That compares with the many millions that Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, along with their allies, invested in TV and radio commercials.
“If you can still achieve a springboard out of Iowa and have a chance to win the nomination because of that without a lot of money but with a lot of work, then the common, regular person has an opportunity to be president of the United States”, King said in an interview. Those voters went to Kasich, who declared his second-place showing an affirmation of his largely positive campaign. “I think that’s me”. He told “Today” that he won’t sit back and “be a marshmallow” if GOP rivals attack.
Ladies and gentlemen – this might be a tough pill to swallow – but, I think we need to start preparing ourselves for an uncomfortable thought. SC and Nevada, where both parties will stage nominating contests before month’s end. And Clinton’s campaign deployed SC state Rep. Todd Rutherford to vouch for her support for minorities. With the single exception of 2012, when the state backed Newt Gingrich, South Carolina has voted for the eventual GOP nominee since 1980.
SC is not Kasich’s only blind spot.
After finishing second in the Iowa caucuses, Trump crushed his competition Tuesday, capturing roughly 35 percent of the vote. “It’s on me. I did not do well on Saturday night”. “Go to the auto, get away from me, God”.
Trump’s odds for winning the White House, once seen as an extremely long shot, improved significantly after his victory in New Hampshire, online betting site Ladbrokes PLC said.
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders meets with Reverend Al Sharpton at Sylvia’s Res … We know about… trade.
Jordan, though, said Bush has the “solid leadership abilities” Trump lacks. “That’s where Marco’s difference is… he’s out there fighting for every American, to get our country back on the right track and that’s what people want to hear”. “And I guess he and I are the only two that are saying that”. “What are we going to do?” “We were just there, and we had 12,000 people in a wonderful, wonderful arena”, he told CNN’s Jake Tapper.
Kasich, who surged from relative obscurity in New Hampshire, has a poorly funded campaign that will struggle to keep up momentum in SC and beyond.
The campaign circulated talking points to surrogates and supporters to drive the point home.
Trump’s 18-point victory and the self-described democratic socialist’s 21-point win are reminders of the limits of party power in an age of anger toward Washington and frustration with politics.
The former president is expected to campaign with Jeb in the coming days, the first time he’s appeared on the stump for his brother.
Already, Bush’s super political action committee, Right to Rise, has spent more than $100,000 on mailings to South Carolinians that cast Kasich, among others, in a negative light, filings with the Federal Election Commission show. The South Carolina senator endorsed Bush after abandoning his own hopes for the presidency in December.
Still, the night’s biggest Republican loser was Rubio, whom Democrats have long targeted as the most formidable potential GOP rival.
The two will focus on national security issues in the important Southern state.
Clinton now looks wounded.
