Kasich says Tamir Rice protesters ‘need to be heard’
“There are people who probably will try to go into Cleveland who don’t live in Cleveland”, he also said.
Puncture The Silence, originally formed against mass incarceration of Blacks and now geared towards combatting police brutality, is convening at 3 pm this afternoon local time outside of the Justice Center Complex in downtown Cleveland.
Jackson emphasized the word “due” when he told reporters he has promised “due process” on his administration’s part as it examines the actions of Loehmann and Garmback as to whether they were correct in their police procedures. That gesture was in support of the family of Eric Garner, a black male killed by police in New York City months before.
Rice’s death has been justified by claims by the officers involved that he looked “big for his age”, or that he was pointing the gun at them.
Surveillance video showed Cleveland police officers shoot Tamir in a matter of seconds of their arrival in front of a Cleveland recreation center past year.
Ohio Prosecutor Tim McGinty announced yesterday that there would be no charges against the police officers involved in the killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice.
They also have criticized McGinty’s office for allowing the grand jury to hear testimony from criminal justice experts who concluded that the officers acted reasonably in shooting the boy.
“It’s fine for everybody to take a look at this, and clearly when you lose a 12-year-old, what more can you say about how tragic it is and imagine how the family feels”. Loehmann, Garmback and other officers were surprised to learn after the shooting that Tamir was just 12. But the 911 call taker didn’t relay that information to the dispatcher who gave the officers their high-priority radio assignment for what is known in police parlance as a “gun run”. He told CNN on Tuesday that the officer, who was white or Hispanic, knew he had made a mistake after the shooting and exclaimed, “I can’t believe it. I thought he was coming at me with that bat”, and “f*** no, no”.
“We need to make sure that everybody gets listened to in this”, Kasich said.
A police force that has a history of excessive use of force, hired a person who has had an excessive use of force history, and had a prosecutor – Timothy McGinty- who worked closely with the department, thus influencing the outcome of a grand jury.
“It comes at a time when the deaths of black men at the hands of police have sparked a national debate”, the article says.
Tamir’s mother, Samaria Rice, released a heartbreaking statement decrying the grand jury’s decision, alleging that a prosecutor “deliberately sabotaged the case” and calling for the federal government to step in.
A recent Federal Bureau of Investigation video analysis, the prosecutor said, showed Tamir “was drawing his gun from his waist as the police slid toward him and Officer Loehmann exited the vehicle”. Jackson said the city will begin an internal review to determine whether the officers should be disciplined for their roles in the killing.
“First they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist”, Niemoeller said.
Rice’s family, which has filed a civil lawsuit in his death, has asked the U.S. Justice Department to review McGinty’s handling of the grand jury, which they believe was manipulated to exonerate the officers, attorney Subodh Chandra said.
