Kate Winslet was asked to settle for ‘fat girl’ roles
Leonardo DiCaprio took home another major award on Sunday night after he picked up the best actor prize of the 2016 British Academy Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
The outdoor epic was also named best film, while Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu received the best director gong.
The US actor, who is hoping to land his first Oscar later this month, said: “I’m absolutely honoured by this award tonight”.
The annual BAFTA awards used to be an alternative for the Oscars. Kate Winslet won the best supporting actress for “Steve Jobs”.
Among the men, Mark Rylance won the Best Supporting Actor for his role as British-born Soviet agent in India’s Reliance Entertainment-backed “Bridge of Spies”, which had nine nominations. “The Big Short” was awarded best adapted screenplay, while best animation went to Disney/Pixar toon “Inside Out”.
Amy was named Best Documentary, while Wild Tales collected the prize for Best Film Not In The English Language.
The head of the British film academy said she supported the protesters’ aims. Emmanuel Lubezki won for Cinematography – his fourth BAFTA overall and third win in a row, and the film also won for Sound. “WHITE actress are”, Baron Cohen said, before host Stephen Fry interrupted him.
Oscar contenders “Spotlight” and “The Big Short” won the top awards for screenwriting from the Writers Guild of America at a ceremony Saturday that was held in Los Angeles and NY.
“Look at me now”, she said, as if the old drama teacher was standing in the crowd of reporters. Highlights included the best film, best director and the best actor award to the clearly highly delighted Leonardo DiCaprio.
The special award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema was presented to Angels Costumes, the world’s longest-established and largest professional costume house, in their 175th year.
“Star Wars” actor John Boyega won the Rising Star Award, which was voted for by the public. Brie Larson bagged yet another nod for her standout role in Room.
A small demonstration by members of the Creatives of Colour Network took place near the red carpet.
The Winslet/DiCaprio friendship has been one of the most enjoyable narratives to emerge from this awards season.
