Katy Perry belts ‘Rise’ and ‘Roar’ at Democratic convention
They singer said she was supporting Hillary Clinton in defiance of her staunchly Republican parents.
“You’ll be just as powerful as any NRA lobbyist”, Katy said. She’s all about graphic nail art and all-over red white and blue (remember that extra-dramatic turban at the rally for Clinton in Iowa in March?), but this serious moment called for a change. “Here’s how I’m going to use my voice: I’m going to vote for Hillary Clinton”.
However, the singer made a couple of subtle changes to the song’s lyrics in honor of the would-be president: “Don’t be surprised, she will still rise”, Perry sang. Perry noted that she has been on the road with Hillary Clinton for much of her campaign.
While accepting her nomination as the first female presidential candidate from a major party, Clinton couldn’t help but shout out 2016’s other dominant political headline: the hit Broadway musical, Hamilton.
Perry was just one of numerous of musicians to sing during the DNC this week.
Then, Perry started singing her new song “Rise”. What we got last night wasn’t exactly Katy Perry 2.0, but at least Katy Perry 1.5. “I don’t think she wanted to come out in a costume”.
Which is maybe why I found her (admittedly clumsy) performance Thursday night kind of endearing. He filmed Katy Perry the whole time she performed. Cory Booker, who spoke at the convention earlier in the week.
