KC’s Young, Duffy hold Indians to no hits through 6 innings
The offense simply couldn’t get a handle on the soft-tossing Chris Young, who retired the first 11 hitters he faced. The Blue Jays, headed to the postseason for the first time since 1993, finished an AL-best 53-28 at home. He allowed one walk, struck out two and threw 68 pitches.
Young left behind a statement which was read by Mike Swanson, the Royals’ vice president of broadcasting and communications. Perhaps your favorite team is also in the hunt for the World Series, or you just didn’t appreciate the way Kansas City behaved early in the season when the Royals were frequently in the middle of on-field confrontations and fights.
Young caught a flight to Dallas before the game ended.
“We’re all a family in here and stuff like that happens throughout the year”, Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said. To throw the ball like he today, you can’t even describe a performance like that. Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost chose to let him, but only planned on getting five innings from the veteran who has been resting and nursing injuries in preparation for the postseason.
Medlen gave up six runs Saturday and could not complete the fourth inning.
Yost added that he wouldve been more upset if it was a one-pitcher bid. Santana advanced Lindor on a flyball and then there was a weird play in which Chisenhall lined out to the pitcher, Brantley got back to 1st after a poor throw by Madson and Lindor ran home without ever tagging up.
Moustakas had occasionally left the team at points during the season to be with his ailing mother, who was thrilled to get to see him make the American League All-Star team after struggling for so long to establish himself as a successful big leaguer. Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis mopped up (despite a late Kipnis double) and the Tribe was two-hit. Hosmer moved to third on catcher Salvador Perez’s single and scored when third baseman Mike Moustakas grounded out. He’d been something of a forgotten man on Kansas City’s pitching staff the past month or so, but Sunday’s outing is one that will be remembered for a long time. Thats hard to have a run taken off the board. “We’re trying to win a game”, Indians manager Terry Francona said. Now, the call was right, I just dont think it was probably handled exactly right..
NOTES: DH Kendrys Morales was not in the Royals’ lineup after being hit in the right ankle by a pitch Saturday. With seven games remaining in the season, Chris Young is likely to make one more regular season start. RHP Phil Hughes will start for Minnesota….
Royals: Right-hander Yordano Ventura (12-8, 4.40 ERA ) will be making his second start at Wrigley Field this year. Monday’s 7:05 p.m. Connecticut game against the Cubs is a makeup of a May 30 rainout.
