Keep the Electoral College — USA TODAY EDITORIAL
With so much anti-Trump sentiment within the GOP, it is theoretically possible for Clinton to pull enough electors across party lines to win the presidency. It wouldn’t take as many individual faithless electors in swing states, or states like California that have a large number of electoral votes, changed their minds.
In the past 24 hours, at least two petitions have appeared calling on electors to back Clinton instead of Trump.
That means Hillary Clinton would be the next president as she led Trump by 400,000 votes. While he lost the popular vote, he won the electoral college with 29 states.
Gaga’s promotion of the Electoral College petition is the latest example of her ongoing protest of Trump’s historic victory.
But the USA president is not selected by individual voters.
In 2000, Democrat Al Gore narrowly won the popular vote but lost to Republican George W. Bush in the Electoral College 271-266.
This election is a total sham and a travesty. “We all go forward with a presumption of good faith in our fellow citizens, which is essential to a vibrant and functioning democracy”.
The worse thing in USA history has happened: Donald Trump. Days before the election, Clinton’s internal polling showed Clinton up by four points in MI, according to an aide.
The impact isn’t random, either. By what right are the votes of the people ignored?
This is what Michael Moore, filmmaker and political activist, in his Facebook- post-gone-viral, has enjoined people to remember in his five-point plan for the morning- after one of the world’s most dramatic election campaigns, and its ensuing results. The Electoral College is a core component of that republic; without it, America would be a step closer to no longer being one.
Trump won based on the current system in place, so Grimaldi said the results must be respected.
This year, Donald Trump’s Electoral College victory will change history in unimaginable ways. There are 50 states plus the District of Columbia that cast votes for president, so 71 percent of the electoral votes are cast by just 12 percent of those voting districts, a significant concentration of power.
But the Electoral College can actually give the White House to either candidate. But none are “red” states. He’s hopeful Trump’s election won’t make Republicans less amenable to changing it. However in the Presidential election it is a different story.
An electoral system which has just delivered one side victory without winning the most votes can only entrench divisions and drive Americans further apart due to the sense among some voters that the victor lacks legitimacy. Faithless electors can – and have – voted for candidates who weren’t on the ballot.
No more presidents chosen by the Supreme Court.
So they created a double buffer. Moreover, many states only impose a fine on electors who defy their state’s voters, and it’s not clear that such penalties are even Constitutional to begin with. Research shows that battleground states enjoy perks under the president’s control, that aren’t as likely to come to those of us in the 25 flyover states. Electors are nominated by their party, and most are deeply loyal. And nearly all states soon let voters rather than lawmakers choose the electors.
In short, the NPVIC will only succeed if it becomes a key campaign issue for Democrats with nonpartisan overtones.
Whilst it may be hard for Democrats to stomach figures showing their losing candidate won thousands more votes than the President-elect, it is only a 0.2 per cent difference.
In other words, the Electoral College has often fulfilled the Founders’ goal of acting as a check on the popular will – but not at all in the way they intended.
