Kell Brook Talks Weight, Gennady Golovkin’s Power, More
“Kell can be the biggest superstar in boxing and the best British fighter ever if he can overcome Golovkin”.
Brook, the IBF middleweight champ, hulked up from 147 to an astounding 167-lbs at the official weigh-ins.
Without a strong supporting cast, the former Olympic silver medalist is putting up big numbers for the subscription-based television network, and fast becoming HBO Boxing’s poster boy.
“No matter what happens in every generation, Kell Brook turns everything upside down and brings boxing to a stop”.
Golovkin is the biggest foreign name to fight in the United Kingdom since Russian-born Australian Kostya Tszyu fought Ricky Hatton in Manchester back in 2005. Like Eddie says it is the biggest thing a British fighter has ever done at any time. It’s my biggest step. I like the atmosphere. “We’ve tried and tried to lure the best to come and fight me and now we’ve got the best of the best – the number one pound for pound fighter in the world is coming to the United Kingdom”. I feel great, it’s different for me here compared to California, but I’m fine.
‘I think Brook can box a very clever fight and use straight shots to get the victory. Brook must keep winning for him to progress from fight to fight, and he must look good. “GGG” has unified the WBC, IBF and WBA 160lbs world titles, although the WBA declined to sanction this contest for their title citing concerns about Brook’s health with him never having fought at the weight before. Of course I do. Brook plans on channeling legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. “But the fear is positive because it’s going to make me super-sharp with cat-like reactions. Naturally, if he would be a naturally lighter guy he could have moved quicker but if he’s going to stand there with a big puncher I think he’s going to get hurt”.
“You could see the fear in Leonard’s eyes when he was in with Hagler – that’s why he was so sharp and zoomed in”.
World-renowned trainer Freddie Roach may have his hands full when he visits his favorite ward Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines to train him against Jessie Vargas, but he wasn’t mincing words in expressing his opinion regarding Kell Brook vs. GGG during his spare time at the Wild Card Gym.
