Kelly left Eagles with long to-(re)do list
According to most insiders, Kelly’s camp has been reaching out for job opportunities as opposed to the other way around. Though the game was relatively meaningless, it helped the Eagles get a look at Pat Shurmur’s ability to run the team if he is hired, and test some of the younger players. For all his skills with the X’s and O’s, Chips’s failure to communicate with his players on a professional level, unwillingness to take accountability for his shortcomings, and unwavering need to be in total control – not to mention, essentially crapping on owner Jeffrey Lurie’s holiday party – led to the alienation of an entire fan base and, ultimately, resulted in Kelly getting fired from his first job as an National Football League head coach.
While Chip Kelly is universally regarded as having a brilliant football mind, his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles was marred by significant struggles relating to players and cooperating with others in the organization.
And without knowing who’s on his way in and what kind of practices he might run, Kelce clearly thinks his teammates should be careful what they wish for. The Eagles are in high gear looking for the next big thing, hopefully The One coach that can take the Birds to the promised land. I had a players-only meeting with them this morning. “Obviously, he’s a free agent”. Stay tuned to see if it happens.
It’s amusing to think that the lack of synergy we saw all year from this team maybe wasn’t the team trying to figure it out.
Examine the other side of the ball and it’s fair to wonder if the Eagles will be talented enough regardless of who coaches them next season.
Pat Shurmur is the Eagles interim head coach, after spending the previous three years as Chip Kelly’s offensive coordinator before replacing him for the final game of the 2015 season.
The Eagles interviewed former running back Duce Staley on Friday.
Payton was scheduled to meet with New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis on Monday to talk about his future with the organization, according to Fox Sports.
Payton was an assistant with the Eagles in 1997-98. Despite the failure of the Kelly experiment, Lurie is still focused on offensive coaches for his next head coach.
The Eagles are very publicly searching for their next head coach after firing Chip Kelly on December 29. “Obviously, we have to reflect on it, and it makes us a lot hungrier”. “We wanted to get lined up, and we have a handful of plays, and then we tried to get into the best one”.
If the Sam Bradford era has ended for the Eagles, it will not be without a late jolt of promise.
The Eagles defense once again got gashed by an opposing offense. That meant that before the season and at the end, they played as they were expected. The six-time Pro Bowler is 33, battled injuries much of the season and has a $9.3 million cap number next season.
