Kelsey Annese, Matthew Hutchinson and Colin Kingston found dead in SUNY house
The victims were identified as Kelsey Annese, 21, of Webster, N.Y., Matthew Hutchinson, 24, of Vancouver, British Columbia and Colin Kingston, 24, of Geneseo. Three bodies were discovered Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, near the State University of NY at Geneseo after Geneseo police responded to the home around 6 a.m. Sunday following a 911 call.
Jeffrey Sezniac of the Genesio Police Department told CKNW that Kingston’s father called 9-1-1 and told police that his son had indicated that he’d hurt his ex-girlfriend Kelsey Annese and was considering harming himself before he ended the call.
When police arrived at the home they found all three dead in the bedroom.
Police say Kingston and Annese had been in a long-term relationship that recently ended and they believe Kingston was distraught.
Police say Kingston and Annese had dated for about three years – and after the break-up he had made some suicidal comments to people.
“There was an altercation that occurred and it was during that altercation that we believe that Miss Annese and Mr. Hutchinson did sustain some fatal stab wounds”.
Annese and Hutchinson were current students at the college, while Kingston was enrolled last semester, according to SUNY Geneseo.
Hutchinson was a senior and a member of the college’s hockey team, all while also volunteering at the Geneseo Volunteer Fire Department.
At a press conference on Monday, police said the deaths were related to a break-up between two of the victims, WHAM reports.
She was remembered by coach Scott Hemer as a selfless team member and an intensely hard worker.
Cops stressed that there were no signs of a break-in at the off-campus home primarily populated by women’s basketball team members.
“We have experienced a awful tragedy in Geneseo today involving members of our community”, SUNY Geneseo President Denise A. Battles stated in a release after the SUNY double murder suicide became public. “We certainly don’t know what his intentions were when he entered that room”, he said. She was majoring in both Spanish and education, and was minoring in psychology. Hutchinson served as a firefighter and played on the school’s hockey team.
The young man was studying geography and business at the school. He also volunteered his time at the Geneseo volunteer fire department. “Thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family”, wrote White Rock man Scott Durham. “I just feel so, so sad for them”. Hutchinson wrote an online commentary for the college about his desire to be a full-time firefighter, including a photo of him dressed in firefighting gear.
Hemer adds, “I don’t know if there’s an easy answer for what’s being said”. But when you talk to him with the pads off, that’s a completely different thing.
