Kemp hits for cycle and Padres beat Rockies 9
Returning home after a four-game sweep at the hands of the mighty New York Mets pitching staff, the Rockies face another disappointing squad, the San Diego Padres. But those legendary Padres players never did.
“I need to start running a little bit more”, joked Kemp, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers last December. However, despite his recent surge, Kemp’s double and triple were his first of the month. Ross was a tough luck 4-2 loser to visiting Philadelphia in his last outing with three runs plated on five hits in seven innings.
Bud Norris (1-0), signed Tuesday by San Diego after Baltimore released him on August 8, took over for starter Tyson Ross and was the winning pitcher.
Kemp’s triple in the ninth hit off the top of the padding of the centerfield wall and bounced back toward the infield, over the head of Rockies centerfielder Charlie Blackmon.
Barnes followed his triple up with another hit – a clean single.
Reliever Ken Roberts (0-1), called up from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day, took the loss.
Arenado had a two-run homer off Ross, one of the stingiest long-ball pitchers in the league.
Rockies: Reliever Boone Logan went on the DL with left elbow inflammation. Much like the Rockies they are now riding out a disappointing season and hoping that the offseason once again brings them some excitement and hope.
